“And God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, …’
So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves,
with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, …”
(Genesis 1:20–21, ESV)
If you have followed our blog for any length of time you are familiar with our frequent lament: “Why don’t we schedule more time at these beautiful Army Corps (COE) campgrounds?” Four years ago we discovered Beard’s Bluff campground in SW Arkansas and wished we had more time to enjoy this quiet place. By His grace our travel path and schedule allowed us to return this week.
However, we had forgotten a warning buried five lines down on the list of “Need to Know” items on the recreation.gov website: “Alligators are present in Millwood Lake”! When we arrived, Bruce noted a dark shape offshore about 100 yards away in the fading light. No, it didn’t move so must not be anything important. The next morning the same shape was still there. Suddenly, only about 25 yards offshore was another identical shape. And then the closer shape surfaced! It definitely was NOT a log!

The dark shape from the night before also moved a couple of times confirming that it too was an alligator! Over the years we’ve stayed at several other COE campgrounds with alligator warnings but we’ve never seen an alligator in the wild! Although we’ve never allowed our pets to remain outside at night, we will certainly keep a close eye on them while here!

Bruce and Salomé (and Katie too) are enjoying this quiet time. Watching a few of the over 300 species of birds that live here, the alligators, reading, and just resting have been refreshing. Once again, we are wishing for more time to enjoy this wonderful place! On Tuesday we will head to Lindale, TX, and the SOWER office to help there for November. 🤠🤗

No napping outside either! Especially barefoot, heard gators love toes!

Gater Toes sounds like a southern dessert! 🤣
